NMN Benefits (Known & Potential) Based on studies

Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) is a molecule that has gained significant attention in recent years due to its potential health benefits.

NMN is a precursor to NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), a coenzyme found in all living cells essential for energy production, DNA repair, and cellular signalling.

As we age, NAD+ levels in our bodies decrease, which is thought to contribute to the aging process.

NMN is being studied for its potential to increase NAD+ levels and promote healthspan and lifespan.

Known Benefits

Improves metabolic health: Studies have shown that NMN supplementation can improve insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation, and decrease fat mass in mice (1, 2).

In humans, a recent clinical trial found that NMN supplementation improved insulin sensitivity and reduced liver fat in overweight and obese men (3).

  1. Boosts cardiovascular health: NMN has been shown to improve endothelial function, which is critical for maintaining healthy blood vessels (4). Additionally, NMN has been found to reduce blood pressure in mice (5).

  2. Enhances cognitive function: NMN has been shown to improve cognitive function in mice, including memory and learning (6). In a recent study in humans, NMN supplementation improved cerebral blood flow and cognitive function in older adults (7).

  3. Promotes exercise performance: NMN has been found to increase exercise endurance in mice (8). In humans, a small study found that NMN supplementation improved muscle oxygenation and exercise performance in older adults (9).

  4. Protects against age-related diseases: NMN has been shown to improve healthspan and lifespan in mice (10). Additionally, NMN has been found to protect against age-related diseases such as neurodegeneration, liver damage, and kidney damage in animal studies (11, 12).

Potential Benefits

These Are:

  1. Anti-aging effects: As mentioned earlier, NMN is a precursor to NAD+, which plays a crucial role in the aging process. Studies have suggested that NMN supplementation could potentially slow down or even reverse some of the effects of aging (13).

  2. Cancer prevention: Some studies have suggested that NMN supplementation could potentially reduce the risk of cancer by protecting against DNA damage and promoting DNA repair (14, 15). There is potential but research on this one is too small.

  3. Immune system support: NMN has been found to enhance immune function in animal studies (16). More research is needed to determine whether this translates to humans.

  4. Diabetes prevention: While NMN has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity in humans, it is not yet clear whether it could prevent the development of type 2 diabetes (17).

Overall, NMN has shown promising results in both animal and human studies for improving metabolic health, cardiovascular health, cognitive function, exercise performance, and protecting against age-related diseases.
